Bing has taken a novel approach to ancient history.  He recounts the early history of Rome, using a business model referencing the modern corporate culture.  He recounts the story of Rome as though it was a business corporation, comparing it at relevant junctures to the processes and culture of modern corporate conglomerates.

This entertaining and sometimes hilarious framework for the story is very enlightening on the character of the human race and provides occasion to evaluate our own personal and societal values now.  He speaks of each nation as a corporation, each empire as a conglomerate.  The Kings are the CEOs.

Bing sees each component in the interplay of nations and peoples in terms of modern corporations and the capitalist business bureaucracies we know today.  This model provides some excellent insights in to the actual events, but especially into the value or morality of events, decisions, attitudes and methods of each period of history.

Though billed as the Story of Rome, Rome is only the starting point.  Bing surveys the history of the West into modern times.  It is a stylized, abbreviated history, and many of the broad strokes hide great complexes of difficulties and complexities.  But he accounts for the broad stereotyped pattern of Western European history in these business terms.

This was entertaining and refreshing, as well as morally rewarding in its evaluation of the patterns of politics and modern business.  He is truly history presenting a detailed and accurate story, but in business terms.  You will truly learn Roman history.
