The sub-title explains the intent and content of the book:  A Healthy Inner Life:  The Key to Christian Living and Ministry.  I knew Bud Fray for many years during the time he served in Africa.  He lived in Zimbabwe and South Africa, and we shared some time together in the US in the mid-80s when we were both living temporarily in Arkansas.

Bud was a mission strategist, professor and counselor to missionaries for many years in Southern Africa, spending most of his years in Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia.  Bud had a gentle spirit and thoughtful demeanor.

He was keen to listen and slow to speak, thinking through what he heard and taking seriously any person he was with at the time.  He had a great love for the people of Zimbabwe with whom he worked for many years.

In this book Bud relates many experiences in African culture as the basis of his reflections.  He teaches us the insights he has gained from the experiences where he learned them.  Bud appreciated the cultures of his African friends.

He could learn from them as well as being available to share with them his own insights and experiences from his perspective.  He focuses on the prayer life and spiritual warfare in cultures alien to the Western rational scientistic context.

While he reflects a somewhat simplistic concept of God's role in revelation, he reflects a vibrant awareness of the realities of the unseen world around us.  Bud had an active sense of God's presence in everyday relationships.

He shows us how we can discover God in our normal encounters.  We can appreciate with this writer the universal and sovereign character of God as Bud shares how he found new or deeper insights through his experiences with African people whom he served.
